The Melbourne Model Railway Society is a group of individuals passionate for model railways. There are a number of collections among club members - Australian - Victoria and other states, American and British. Our main HO scale club layout is predominately Australian, and as such most weeks run Australian rolling stock. However besides theme nights we are free to run any locomotives and rolling stock we wish. We are located in the old goods hold under Auburn Station, opposite the ticketing machines. The station is located in Melbourne, Australia.
Visitors and potential members are always welcome. Whether you're just getting into the hobby or want to get more involved feel free to drop by one evening.
Our latest newsletter is now available here. You can find our newsletters at this page. This edition is John Ford's first as newsletter editor. He has taken over the role from former club president Andrew Manser. We would like to thank John for taking over this role, and we thank Andrew for performing this role since 2009.
MMRS will again have a display both at the Sandown Model Railway Exhibition March 8 - 10. This event is one of the larger model railway exhibitions in Melbourne each year and is held at the Sandown Racecourse.
Thanks to all of you who have supported and helped us man the club stall at these events. We find them a great source of interest to many members of the public - model layout signalling is quite uncommon and thus of special interest to visitors.
At MMRS we operate Tuesday and Friday evenings, from about 7.30pm until roughly 10pm.
The first and third Tuesday nights are work nights, but run a timetable session on the second, fourth and fifth Tuesdays of every month.
Friday nights are timetable nights, but run a work night on the fifth Friday of the month (if one occurs).
Our layout incorporates six stations and two branch lines. The layout is an end-to-end layout, with the option to run in a continuous circuit, bypassing both terminal stations. On most nights we run according to a specified timetable. The two branch lines are optional, and only operate when we have enough members to operate them in addition to the stations. If we have a lot of members we will have four drivers controlling individual trains, while the station masters simply perform local shunting duties, plus setup signals and routes for the drivers.
As mentioned above we have themed nights at least once a month . As our layout is predominantly Australia themed with a strong rural feel, most evenings are run with Australian locomotives and rolling stock. Whilst many themed nights also reflect this, we also run American and British theme nights, and in addition may in addition specify an era or steam or diesel evenings.
Whilst members are welcome to bring their locomotives and rolling stock any night, themed nights are a great opportunity to show off your favourite locomotives. If you can't bring anything that's okay too.
We are fortunate enough to have an appropriate venue for our layout. The long disused goods storage area under Auburn Station provides plenty of room for our current layout. Auburn Station is on the suburban Belgrave/Lilydale/Alamein lines in Melbourne, Australia. The suburb the station is in is Hawthorn East. The station is a one minute walk from Auburn Road, just north of Burwood Road. The entrance to the clubrooms is a door just opposite from the ticket vending machines underneath the platforms. You'll notice a sign above the door with "MMRS" on it. This is the clubroom.
